We’ve gone back up the rugged Argentine mountains … and it’s worth the trip every time. This latest release joins a growing group of popular and award-winning wines from our talented friend Francisco Puga.
His Ascencion Malbec has a major following (plus plenty of awards and critical acclaim). As the winemaker of one of our most-loved Argentine Malbecs, Francisco’s plan to craft a premium blend really piqued our interest.
A ‘top of the world’ wine that’s not to be missed …
At a dizzying 8,000 feet above sea level, the Calchaquí Valley is known for producing intensely flavored grapes. Thanks to the hot days, cool nights and Andes snowmelt, the grapes develop unique qualities – and for quite some time, Francisco wanted to create a special red wine to showcase their best attributes. He had his choice of premium fruit from some of Argentina’s oldest vineyards … and not just Malbec. For his Winemaker’s Reserve, Francisco also selected old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and rare Tannat, which (like Malbec) is a southern French grape that thrives up in the Andes.
The result is a complex, multi-layered red with ripe black cherry and plum, plus mocha and spicy cedar accents from time spent in fine French oak. It’s a serious dinner party red (Francisco recommends decanting an hour before serving) and a must-try, especially for Ascencion fans.
Limited production means high sell-out risk.
