Malbec may be a star in Argentina, but it’s also making waves in South Africa, where Charles Back has been experimenting with the grape for years – and he’s not just any winemaker. He’s the man in charge at the hugely acclaimed Fairview estate, a winner of the coveted International Wine Challenge Lifetime Achievement Award, and “one of the great entrepreneurs and innovators of the wine world” (Tim Atkin, MW).
Charles’ exclusive red is the bounty of one of his estate vineyards in gorgeous Paarl, in the heart of the Western Cape, where Malbec thrives under blue skies and brilliant sunshine. After harvest and fermentation, this fine red spent 10 long months in French and American oak barrels, for spicy complexity.
Look forward to aromas of ripe black plum and mixed spice (clove, anise, nutmeg) supported by lovely red berry fruit and delicate mocha notes on the palate with a long finish.
If you have time, decant this Malbec about 30 minutes before serving, to unlock its full range of delicious aromas and flavors. Then, pair with beef! Steaks, skewers, ribs, roasts, burgers ... they’ll all work deliciously. Lamb meatballs in a tangy barbecue sauce will also be tasty.
