Welcome to Sicily, the sun-drenched Italian island that’s become a hot (pun intended) destination for lovers of super-rich reds.
International (and heat-worshipping) grape Syrah has turned into quite the star on the Sicilian wine scene. Your delicious, barrel-aged proof hails from fourth-generation Davide di Prima’s prime-sited vineyards, planted by Davide’s grandfather and overlooking the sparkling Lago di Arancio and Planeta (the island’s most famous estate).
“2015 saw near-perfect conditions,” Davide tells us. “And the gnarled old vines that were originally farmed by my grandfather produced tiny amounts of really, really concentrated grapes. Our Syrah is deeply colored with rich fruit and appealing mocha aromas. The palate bursts with ripe plums, juicy black cherries and spices, all wrapped up in a generous lick of dark chocolate.”
Decanter magazine was certainly impressed – they gave it a 90-point, silver-medal rating and this rave review:
“An intense wine with spices of pepper, leather and varietal characters on the palate. Ripe and concentrated with smooth, velvety tannins and freshness. Good value.”
Good value indeed – at well under the $15 mark, this juicy crowd-pleaser is guaranteed to impress.
