Gran Reservas are always special – made only in good years with the best grapes, and given extra TLC in the cellar. This one is even more special, as its release marks the 125th anniversary of Rioja’s sought-after Bodegas Valdemar.
Valdemar is run by the Martínez Bujanda clan – a true Riojan dynasty that stretches back five generations. Proprietor Jesús Martínez Bujanda took parcels of his finest, strawberry-fruited Tempranillo and added Graciano and Mazuelo (for extra aromatic complexity and velvety texture), before tucking it away in expensive oak barrels for over 24 months.
This is everything a primo Gran Reserva should be: subtle aromas of roasted black fruits, lifted by elegant floral and vanilla-nut notes. The palate boasts a velvety texture that wraps around a core of rich, red plum and strawberry. Pleasing balsamic notes round out the long finish.
