Unearthed for You at a Historic Cellar Dating to the 15th Century …
Hospices de Strasbourg has a 500+ year heritage of producing top-notch Alsatian wines – the cellar still holds a wine from the year 1472!
A group of leading local producers – including the sought after Gisselbrecht family, makers of some seriously acclaimed Riesling – banded together in the 1990s to restore the cellar to its former glory.
The Gisselbrechts (who also happen to be old friends of ours) are actually the family behind this cuvée, crafting it with grapes grown in their steeply sloped vineyards. And because 2016 was a great vintage in Alsace, the fruit grew perfectly ripe and, according to Phillippe and Claude Gisselbrecht, delivers “a classic expression of Riesling.”
Made in a richer style – but still gloriously bone dry and refreshing – this lemon-packed gem also has complex nuances of vibrant lime peel and white flowers. It delivers a long, flinty finish and will shine with cheese, Asian dishes, poultry, and so much more. (One of Riesling’s hallmarks: it’s incredibly versatile with food.)
Worth mentioning, especially for all our Riesling enthusiasts: the Gisselbrechts only made one barrel of this Riesling, and we took the whole lot. So not only will you not find it anywhere else, there’s not a ton to go around. Hurry.
