Pouilly-Fumé makes some of the world’s most distinctive Sauvignon Blanc, loved for its racy freshness and trademark flinty, minerally nose. We owe Loire Valley expert Charles Sydney a BIG thank you for introducing us to this lovely example. It hails from a 60-year-old boutique cellar, recently revived by director Christophe Denoël and talented winemaker François Poirier.
As you’ll taste, Cristophe and François knew how to make the most of the stellar 2015 vintage (which Charles raves about for its incredible quality, albiet lower quantities – especially in Pouilly-Fumé). The perfectly ripe fruit was cool-fermented to lock in Pouilly’s trademark steely freshness, then aged on sur lie or ‘on its lees,’ for extra richness and complexity. A portion of the fruit was also given a gentle slumber in fine oak barriques, for even greater depth of flavor.
Look forward to an intense nose of gooseberry, lime, fresh-cut grass and classic smoky character (reminiscent of gunflint). Fresh citrus and passion fruit flavors frame the refreshing mineral finish.
Traditionally served with the Loire’s famous goat cheese, Crottin de Chavignol; also a fine match for shellfish (especially oysters) and spicy Thai cuisine. Do be quick with your orders – we’ve limited cases to share.
