White Rioja flies a bit under the radar of many white wine lovers. But it’s true – Rioja makes fantastic reds and whites. And this new find from a historic family may wind up being your new favorite (it’s one of ours, anyway).
Our Spanish wine expert, Beth Willard, swung by Bodegas Manzanos on her last trip to Rioja. Right before she left, they cracked open the very first bottles of their new white – and, as Beth tells it, a lightbulb went on. “I knew this was utterly perfect for customers. Rich and rounded, but still elegant and filled with so much energy. Honestly, it reminds me of a really good Burgundy – this is a cracking good price for the quality!”
And the estate? Bodegas Manzanos is manned by fifth-generation brothers, Victor and David. They may be young, but they are proudly (and quite successfully) carrying on their family’s historic winemaking tradition. Among all their other acclaim, their wines have landed on Harpers prestigious “10X10 Rioja Top 100” list. And this will give you a perfect taste of their style.
A blend of star Rioja white grape, Viura (aka Macabeo) and Chardonnay, its ripe, orchard-fruit flavors and subtle toasty notes from six months in French oak barrel really does recall sought-after white Burgundy. But as Beth says, it's a fantastic value. You'll want to get your hands on this ASAP before it's all gone ...
