The region of Bolgheri, sitting on the Tuscan coast, is one of Italy’s most prestigious vineyard areas. It’s home to storied Super Tuscans like legendary Ornellaia and Sassicaia, whose stunning red blends rival Cru Classé Bordeaux in reputation, age-worthiness, elegance and complexity – but you’ll pay a pretty penny to enjoy them. If you know where to look (and have the contacts on the ground), there’s a bounty of premium, flavor-packed Bolgheri reds available at much friendlier prices.
Discovered by our expert, Davy Zyw, this sumptuous blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah was crafted by powerhouse duo Giorgio Meletti Cavallari and Luca Marrone. The hand-harvested grapes hail from Giorgio’s terraced, nine-acre Piastreto vineyard is among the highest in the region, perched at more than 1,000 feet up and overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. And because the region enjoyed such a fantastic vintage in 2015, the aromas and flavors are even more rich and intense.
Luca (star winemaker at Podere Grattamacco and Poggio di Sotto, who regularly wins 90-plus points) took over in the cellar, carefully sorting through the grapes, handpicking only the best of the best. Aged 10 months in oak barrels, the wine brims with vibrant, red fruit flavors plus mouthwatering balsamic and spice notes. It will be a tasty match for meaty Italian fare, from a selection of fine salumi and firm cheeses to sausage lasagne or rosemary-grilled steaks.
