Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast just south of Livorno, is one of Italy's most prestigious vineyard areas. It’s home to storied Super Tuscans (like legendary Ornellaia) that rival Cru Classé Bordeaux in reputation, age-worthiness, elegance and complexity – though you’ll pay a pretty penny to enjoy them. If you know where to look, it’s also possible to find premium, flavor-packed Bolgheri reds at much friendlier prices. Here to prove the point is this new exclusive from the masterful Franco Bernabei at the 100-year-old family estate of Prince Girolamo Strozzi (whose illustrious family tree includes none other than Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo – aka the Mona Lisa).
Franco, ("one of Italy's foremost winery consultants," (Decanter) hand-selected his finest blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40 percent), Merlot (40 percent) and Syrah (20 percent) from the family’s estate vineyards, just inland from the coast. Cabernet and Merlot thrive here and produce well-structured, intensely flavored wines with elegance and finesse. The addition of Syrah contributes deep color and spicy dark-fruit character.
A reference to the colorful peacocks (‘pavoniere’) that roam the Strozzi estate, Le Pavoniere boasts a gorgeous palate of black currant, plum, blackberry and raspberry, lifted by warm Etruscan spice notes. Look for bewitching complexity and well-structured, round tannins, gleaned from 12 months’ aging in fine oak.
Decant this premium red to really open it up. Then sip it with a choice cut of steak or roast rack of lamb.
Very few cases imported.
