Valentino Cirulli’s family owns the only vineyard within the city limits of Rome, located within the central region of Lazio. Planted with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (and a few other native Italian varieties, of course), this unique vineyard not only basks in an incredible amount of sun, but it overlooks the famous Via Appia – one of the earliest Roman roads. Definitely a neat picture to share with guests as you pour.
Valentino’s vineyard was especially blessed in 2015, universally praised by critics as one of the finest vintages across the whole of Italy – and the grapes grew riper and richer than ever.
He used 80% Merlot (for intense, roasted black plum character) and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon for added structure. Then, he aged the lot for six months in fine French barriques. Boasting smooth black cherry flavor, with hints of spicy cocoa and vanilla (thanks to the oak), Romaeus will make a delicious match for hearty Italian fare – and, it will cellar well for the next decade.
