This exclusive cuvée is a must-try for Cabernet fans. It comes from the Mercer clan, Washington’s ‘first family’ in wine, and top winemaker Jessica Munnell (formerly No. 2 at Ste. Michelle, Washington’s leading estate).
Originally from Rosehearty, Scotland (for which they’ve named this Cabernet), the Mercer family settled in the Columbia Valley over 125 years ago. Since then, they’ve cultivated the same property in the Horse Heaven Hills (so-called for the plush, green grass that graces the fields). In 1972, they were the first family to plant wine grapes here, and they remain one of the top names in the region.
Horse Heaven Hills is a winemaking paradise – its natural water supply and fertile, sandy soils impart a lighter, dustier quality to the wine, creating a smooth texture that makes for easy drinking. Combine these natural gifts with the stellar 2015 vintage (Wine Spectator rated it 92-95 points for yielding wines with “ripe flavors and polished texture”), and you’ve got an ideal setting for delicious Cabernet Sauvignon.
Sultry dark fruit aromas are complemented by subtle smoke and spice notes, thanks to two years of French oak aging. Ripe blueberry and cassis flavors give way to more smoky oak on the palate, with a smooth finish, courtesy of those “heavenly hills.” A perfect partner for traditional Scottish dishes (think hearty beef and roasted veggies).
