Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is one of the Golden State’s great gifts to red wine. If you’re a fan of California’s charming style (or of rich, velvety reds in general), you’re in for a real treat with our newest discovery.
Weyland Estate hails from Sonoma’s premium Alexander Valley district. In-the-know Merlot lovers head to this tiny sub-region because it specializes in ripe, complex flavors and Napa-beating values. And thanks to exceptional 2015 – “a sure-bet vintage that ticks all the boxes,” writes Decanter – quality hit new heights.
To take full advantage of the superb vintage, the team behind Weyland Estate chose to harvest the Merlot at night, which locked in all the deliciously pure, fruit-driven character. Back in the cellar, 18 months’ aging in French and American oak barrels added subtle spice notes to the luscious cherry and plum flavors. This is a beautiful Merlot to enjoy now (especially with roasted duck or grilled salmon), but it will also reward careful cellaring for years to come.
