You’re looking at the premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s latest: a blockbuster vintage Petite Sirah, and it’s got some seriously intense character, thanks to the excellent 2014 vintage.
Petite Sirah plays a small, but important, role in some of Coppola’s most sought-after releases. But Clare, our woman on the ground in California, was so taken with it that she asked head winemaker Corey Beck if he would let this this inky-dark beauty have a solo career. She couldn’t have been happier when he made her “an offer she couldn't refuse.” And this second vintage release has just as much class as its predecessor. Here’s Corey:
“Petite Sirah is one of the most intense grapes in terms of color and tannin. To avoid extracting too much tannin from our fruit, we pressed the grapes very gently in order to achieve a more delicate style of wine that doesn’t need to age. Our fruit is grown in a variety of warm appellations, including Lodi, Paso Robles and Dry Creek. Another ideal harvest in 2014 resulted in beautiful aromatics, great balance, complex flavors and an even silkier texture than our 2013 A Tavola.”
The first thing you’ll notice in the glass is the deep, purple-black color. Blackberries, cherries, plums, tobacco leaves and a hint of licorice greet you on the nose. And on the palate, your taste buds will be treated to flavors of sweet cassis and fresh blueberry plus hints of dark chocolate and baking spices. A Tavola! is Francis’ tribute to memorable meals around his grandmother’s table, and this charismatic red would be perfectly cast in your next family feast – especially if it stars alongside a rack of lamb, roasted game (like squab) or rib-eye steaks.
This flavor-packed California red is a must-taste for lovers of big, rich wines. And let us know what you (and your guests) think!
