Cremant de Limoux AOC

Master of Wine Jancis Robinson has ranked this luxurious, vintage fizz among her Top 25 bubblies, in her Financial Times list of sure-fire festive wines. Her praise:

“Very fine mousse. Clean, fresh, light nose. Very youthful but well put together.”

Winemaker Viviane Gianesini works her magic beneath the cool hills of Limoux – where the monks of Saint Hilaire are said to have mastered sparkling wine methods in 1531, nearly a century ahead of Dom Pérignon. (Bottles back then were fragile and didn’t travel well, so their success remained a secret.)

Today, this southern French town is the insider’s choice for sparkling quality and value. It’s not hard to see why. You’ll enjoy two of the same grapes (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) used in Champagne, balanced here by a dose of bright, honeyed Chenin Blanc. Then there’s Viviane’s quality-driven approach in the cellar – the same methode traditionelle used to make fine Champagne. The previous release stood out among dozens of contenders at the International Wine Challenge, taking home a prestigious medal. We can’t wait to see what kind of acclaim this exciting 2015 grabs …

Pour your glass and you’ll spot the tell-tale sign of quality: the delicate stream of tiny bubbles. Delicious to drink now, this vintage sparkler makes a sophisticated aperitif or lovely partner for appetizers, cheeses and fresh seafood. If you can bear to wait, it’ll also age well – give it a few years in your cellar.
