Sicily is h-o-t right now, and boasts a bevy of super-talented winemakers with ultra-high quality standards.
Leonardo Urso is one of the biggest winemaking names on the island, famous for making premium wines that can command $80+ a bottle. His old, hillside vines overlook a beautiful lake (Lago Arancio), famed for the ancient Moorish fort that is partially submerged there.
In the hottest years, the lake waters recede far enough to reveal the stone building’s turret – a sure sign for Leonardo that his prized Nero d’Avola, Syrah, and Merlot grapes have reached an outstanding level of ripeness, and it’s time to harvest (by hand, of course). This phenomenon only occurs once in a while, so his “Turret of the Lake” red is not only rare, it’s earned a cult-like status with the locals. It wasn’t easy, but our man on the ground was able to wrestle a few cases away for our customers – but you need to be quick if you want to get a taste.
Look forward to an inky-dark red that delivers a wallop of rich, luscious flavors: dried fig, red and black cherry, blackberry, and hints of cracked black pepper.
