When you’re named Italian Winemaker of the Year not once, not twice, but four times by the judges at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, you know you’re doing something right.
Enter: John Matta. Decanter calls his 14th-century Castello di Vicchiomaggio (that once hosted Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci) “splendid.” Today, it’s John who’s the resident master artist – and he’s crafted this exclusive Sangiovese just for us.
After seeing the quality of the fruit (perfectly ripe, thanks to Tuscany’s excellent 2015 vintage), John chose to craft this wine in the traditional governo alla toscana style, where the juice from slowly air-dried grapes is introduced to a young wine, initiating a secondary fermentation – this creates incredibly intense, concentrated fruit flavor and imparts a rich, mouthfilling texture. Our Italian expert, Davy Zyw, explains it best:
“Think of this red like a super-charged Chianti, only from the south of Tuscany. It has the same freshness and ripeness of fruit, but with more weight and richness on the palate. Great depth and balance, with black cherry, red currant and baking spice flavors – perfect for a big bowl of pasta.”
Our Tuscan reds tend to sell quickly – and with its fine pedigree, this one’s going to be no different. Hurry.
