Cinco De Mayo - Celebrate life; spend a day honoring this Mexican Tradition!

Cinco De Mayo, spanish for the fifth of May- commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 Battle of Puebla. During the France American war it was Mexico’s unlikely victory over France that sparked this memorable hoilday. A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence day though, that is celebrated on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is considered a relatively minor holiday in Mexico celebrated mainly in the state of Puebla. Though, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a large celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. Found particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.

Chef and Sommelier Alexandria provides awe inspiring spanish wine and food pairing for this special holiday.

2012 Cabeza De Toro Bobal

This wonderfully balanced single varietal- bobal, has zero evidence of being a stubborn, low yielding grape. Cabeza De Toro’s noteworthy wine maker Vicente Garcia has taken great care and precision in creating such a subtle red fruit and fresh oak tasting wine. This Bobal has soft round tannins and a light finish, pairing beautifully with Pozole. Pozole is a rich soup containing tender pork, hominy, lime, cabbage and avocado. Reserved for special occasions

2011 Piscadela Reserva

Contrasting to the lighter Bobal, this red blend is fuller bodied with a rich complexity. The varietals within this Portuguese blend are Trincaderia, Touriga Franka, Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Each varietal plays a key role in the velvety smooth full flavor wine. Reserva, meaning it has spent 12 months in oak aging softens tannins and adds vanilla and toasted aromas. Flavor notes of spice, dark fruit, and earthy leather undertones offer perfect attributes to a food friendly wine. The Piscadela would be best suited with grilled barbeque dishes such as carne asada.

Carne Asada’s direct translation is grilled meat, mainly steak such as skirt steak, flank steak or flap steak. Marinated and seared on the grill this juicy charred steak is perfect with a bold glass of Piscadela.

*I would recommend decanting for optimal enjoyment!

2011 Sendero des Santos Riax Biaxas Albarino

This pale gold crisp and refreshing Albarino is bursting with tropical and citrus notes. Aromas of grapefruit lemon balm, ripe pineapple, apricot, and notes of violet and flint. On the palate it starts off with some sea salt minerality, and develops into notes of creamy honeysuckle and pineapple with herbal grassy lemon undertones. No sweetness, medium acidity and a short finish.

Perfect chilled on its own...
